Pikangikum on ZOOM - day 1
This the the first time that OUR WORLD has had simultaneous workshops! SO EXCITING!
Today from 8:50am-10:50am Vancouver time and 10:50am-12:50pm Pikangikum time we met on ZOOM and talked film. The art teacher, Vanessa, purchased new cameras, sound equipment and latops and is excited to see what her students create!
Although it is always best to meet in person, by using ZOOM we are able to conduct a workshop even while things are still uncertain in terms of travel and COVID-19. All things considered…today went well...and we appreciate everyone’s patience with technology and the awkwardness that comes with meeting people digitally! ;)
Today we screened the 5 films made last time at Eenchokay Birchstick School….in 2019…and talked about style and content.... AND special guests: Hosiah, Kavarah and Curtis even came by to specifically talk about their film Highschool DRAMA, which, incidentally was selected for Asinabka Film and Media Arts Festival in Ottawa in 2020! BIG CONGRATS again on that ! YAY!
There is a rumour that this team MAY make a SEQUEL! (We sure hope so!)
We also met each student individually in order to start brainstorming ideas:
Danica is interested in photography. Josiah likes learning musical instruments and put his hand up about potentially being an actor in a film. Quentin likes video games and will be supported by his TE Creighton. Tyra revealed she likes beading (so we showed a film for inspiration called Gwitchin Beadwork). Lakota is interested in makeup - super important in almost ALL films! Liana is new to the class, so was unsure what to share at this moment. Sharmell and Jordan both love sleep, which we can ALL relate to. Destiny is really good at drawing (as Vanessa revealed!). Nadine enjoys sports! Larissa likes volleyball! Pierre likes basketball…so we screened Rez Ball (a sports inspired film) from Haida Gwaii as inspiration. Cheryl is interested in cute things and Maddie didn’t know what to share at this moment.
It was so nice to hang out and learn a bit about everyone…
The homework is to consider if folks want to work by themself or within a team… and ALSO bring ideas tomorrow!
Thanks everyone for their openness to the process of storytelling and filmaking! We are looking forward to tomorrow.
