Kangiqsujuaq - Workshop Day 1
Nigel arrives at 11am and starts immediately working on his film. He already wrote 6 pages in Inuktitut last night so he does a little pre-production of what scenes he plans to film. He then recorded a rough version of his voice over in the back storage room/recording studio.
Nigel’s dad, Bernie, arrives to tell his story. He wants to support his son. A camera is set up and a mic pinned to Bernie and so he tells his life story on film with the hope it can help people learn from his life. In particular he hopes that services: counselling, hospitals, rehab etc can be provided for Inuit and First Nations and Metis people in their own communities. It was an emotional afternoon, as we all listened and recorded together. Bernie is leaving town but Nigel will edit his interview.
Nigel then listened to his own recording. He found a beat he likes and prepared and practiced to make the real recording. Once prepared, he went to the location that he already scouted, a back room at the Qaggiq (Gathering Place…the Community Centre). He then set up the camera and rerecorded himself performing the Inuktitut. It is a very powerful & personal story where he hopes to dissuade people from killing themselves. Nigel edits late into the evening, inspired to get to his film to a certain point. Nigel has an incredible work ethic.
We met Tasha (Natasha) and Adam, residents at Secondary Six Residence and invited them both to make films. Fingers crossed.
We also met Annie who is studying in Kangiqsujuaq with her two kids Angie (1 year) and Alavie (5 years) from Umiujaq. Alavie hangs out with us a lot and is a fun kid with a wicked sense of humour!
