Travel to Bella Bella
It was touch and go leaving from Vancouver on the morning after a giant dump of snow!!! Snow seems to render Vancouver un-traversable…and the night before made all the roads a nightmare! Some folks were stuck on the highway for HOURS! And folks didn’t have snow tires and buses weren’t running so many people were stranded. This morning traffic was still bad, yet us three mentors (Lisa W, Reed and Lisa g) managed to get to the airport on time ! Since there is still the wind warning in Bella Bella, we were unsure if the flight would be able to leave. Lucky for us the plane departed with only about a 45 minute delay. One hour later after a lovely flight we had quite a windy landing…not only bumping up and down but side to side as well! It felt like a roller coaster!
Lori, Reg and Claudette all came to the airport and then we got to drop our gear at the Youth Center, our clothes as the amazing and art-filled airbnb…(thank you Ben and Norma for settling us in) then groceries and then back to set up for first workshop at the Youth Center.
Reg and Claudette made an amazing wonton soup! Anne and April were making blackberry jelly and Lori and youth volunteers were showing up to help with the Elder Christmas Dinner. We LOVE the bustle and hominess of the Youth Center!
Suddenly around 6pm the power went out due to winds but lucky for the Elders the food was all cooked and the power came back on about an hour later so they got to have the Elvis impersonator perform after all!
For us at the airbnb we felt spoiled with the generator, thanks Ben for taking care of us…
Looking forward to tomorrow….
